About the operator
Digicel is a mobile network operator and home entertainment provider founded in 2001 by Irish entrepreneur Denis O’Brien and headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. The company launched in Jamaica in April 2001 and expanded rapidly across the Caribbean and Central America, eventually operating in around 25 markets. Digicel previously had Pacific operations, which were sold to Telstra in 2022.
In January 2024 Digicel completed its third debt restructuring in five years, swapping roughly $1.7 billion of debt for equity. A consortium of bondholders led by PGIM, Contrarian Capital Management and GoldenTree Asset Management took majority control, while founder Denis O’Brien’s stake was reduced to about 10%. The exercise cut total debt to approximately $3.1 billion.

Network & technology
Digicel operates GSM, 3G (UMTS) and 4G LTE networks across its Caribbean and Central American markets, with 5G/5G+ deployment under way in selected territories such as Barbados, where a nationwide 5G+ network launched in November 2025; full regional 5G coverage is not yet complete.
Reputation & market position
Digicel is widely recognized as one of the two dominant mobile operators in the Caribbean alongside Flow/Liberty Latin America, but consumer feedback is mixed: third-party review aggregators (Trustpilot, CustomerServiceScoreboard, Comparably) record frequent complaints about customer service responsiveness, billing disputes and patchy network performance in some islands.
Pros
- Broad regional footprint across ~25 Caribbean and Central American markets
- Mature 4G LTE network across most operating territories
- 5G/5G+ rollout has begun in markets such as Barbados (2025)
Cons
- Customer service and billing receive consistently poor ratings on Trustpilot and CustomerServiceScoreboard
- 5G coverage remains limited; full regional rollout is still years away
- Heavily indebted history with three restructurings in five years (2019-2024)

Frequently asked questions
Does Digicel support eSIM?
Yes, in many of its markets. Digicel sells eSIM for compatible phones through its local websites, stores and the MyDigicel app, though availability and activation steps differ island by island. If you would rather skip local signup entirely, a prepaid AviaeSIM travel plan that connects to the Digicel network can be installed before you even arrive.
How do I get a Digicel eSIM as a tourist?
Digicel offers prepaid tourist options in several markets, usually bought in a local store or via the MyDigicel app; some islands require ID for registration, and app payments can be awkward with foreign cards. The alternative is a prepaid AviaeSIM travel eSIM: buy it online before your trip, scan a QR code, and it uses the Digicel network locally with no store visit.
Which countries can I use an AviaeSIM plan on the Digicel network?
AviaeSIM plans connect to Digicel-branded networks in 27 Caribbean and Pacific destinations, including Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Papua New Guinea. Coverage follows Digicel's local 4G footprint on each island. AviaeSIM is an independent travel eSIM service, not Digicel itself; it simply rides on the Digicel network in these destinations.
Digicel roaming or a travel eSIM for island hopping?
Roaming across the Caribbean on your home carrier is often billed at high per-megabyte or daily rates, and each island may count as a separate zone. A prepaid travel eSIM avoids that: an AviaeSIM plan bought per destination gives a fixed data allowance on the Digicel network. Digicel's own roaming bundles mainly serve its local subscribers moving between its markets.
