About the operator
MTN Group is a South African multinational mobile telecommunications company headquartered in Johannesburg and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Founded in 1994 as M-Cell during the early post-apartheid liberalization of South African telecoms, it rebranded to MTN in 2002 and grew through aggressive expansion into emerging markets across Africa and the Middle East.
In November 2025 MTN became the first African-headquartered telco to surpass 300 million subscribers, making it the largest mobile operator on the continent and one of the largest in the world by subscriber count. The group operates in 16 markets, with Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and Uganda accounting for the bulk of its customer base, and runs MoMo, one of Africa’s largest mobile-money platforms.

Reputation & market position
MTN is widely regarded as Africa’s leading mobile brand for scale and 5G performance, but it has a notable track record of regulatory and compliance issues, including a $5.2 billion Nigerian fine in 2015 over unregistered SIMs (later reduced) and ongoing US lawsuits and scrutiny related to its 49% stake in MTN Irancell. Customer-service complaints on Trustpilot and Hellopeter are also common across several markets.
