About the operator
MobiCom is Mongolia's first mobile operator and one of its largest, connecting Ulaanbaatar and the provinces with 2G, 3G and 4G LTE since 1996. Established as a joint venture between Mongolian partners and Japan's KDDI and Sumitomo Corporation, it launched the country's first GSM network and remains a KDDI group company headquartered in Ulaanbaatar.
In a country three times the size of France with barely 3.5 million people, MobiCom's network is built around where people actually live and travel: the capital, aimag (provincial) centres, soum towns and the main road and rail corridors, including the Trans-Mongolian line. Between settlements, the steppe and the Gobi are largely uncovered by every operator, so remote trips need offline maps whichever carrier you use.
For visitors, AviaeSIM offers prepaid travel eSIMs that run on the MobiCom network in Mongolia. The eSIM installs by QR code before departure, so you land at Chinggis Khaan International Airport with data already working — no branch queue, no paperwork — while MobiCom's own SIMs remain the better fit for long stays that need a local Mongolian number.

Network & technology
MobiCom runs GSM/2G, 3G and 4G LTE, with LTE concentrated in Ulaanbaatar and the aimag centres and older technologies filling in smaller towns and highway corridors. Urban coverage in the capital is strong; in the countryside, signal follows settlements and main roads, and the long stretches of steppe and Gobi between them have no coverage from any Mongolian operator — plan offline maps for remote legs of a trip.
Reputation & market position
As the operator that introduced mobile service to Mongolia, MobiCom is one of the market's household names and has historically been its largest or joint-largest player, competing head-to-head with Unitel while Skytel and G-Mobile serve smaller niches. Its Japanese-backed heritage is associated locally with reliable engineering, and the company promotes tourist-oriented prepaid packs during the summer and Naadam festival season.

Frequently asked questions
Does MobiCom offer eSIM?
MobiCom supports eSIM for its own subscribers, but as with any Mongolian SIM you must register in person with your passport at a branch or airport counter. If you simply need data on the MobiCom network, a prepaid AviaeSIM travel eSIM activates by QR code before you arrive, with no registration or store visit.
Can tourists buy a MobiCom SIM card in Mongolia?
Yes. Prepaid MobiCom SIMs are sold at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and at branches in Ulaanbaatar; foreigners need a passport, since Mongolia requires SIM registration. If you would rather skip the counter — or arrive outside opening hours — an AviaeSIM prepaid eSIM on the MobiCom network installs before your flight and works on landing.
What is the best travel SIM for Mongolia?
It depends on your trip. For a short visit centred on Ulaanbaatar and organised tours, a prepaid travel eSIM on the MobiCom network is the simplest option: you buy it online, install it by QR code and pay no roaming. For long stays, or if you need a local Mongolian number, a registered MobiCom SIM from a branch is the better fit.
Does MobiCom coverage work in the Gobi and the countryside?
Partially. MobiCom covers Ulaanbaatar, aimag centres, soum towns and the main road corridors well, but the open steppe and much of the Gobi between settlements have no mobile signal from any operator. Tourist camps often sit near covered towns, yet you should download offline maps and expect gaps on long drives — this applies to eSIMs and local SIMs alike.
