Network & technology

Zain operates 2G, 3G, 4G LTE and 5G networks across its footprint and was the first operator to launch commercial 5G in Kuwait and the GCC; in 2025 it rolled out 5G-Advanced nationwide in Kuwait, and Zain KSA’s 5G covers 35+ Saudi cities. Zain was named Fastest 5G Network, Best 5G Network and Best Coverage in Kuwait at the Ookla Speedtest Awards announced around MWC Barcelona 2026.

Reputation & market position

Zain enjoys strong industry recognition, including Ookla and Opensignal awards for 5G performance in Kuwait and a 14-time win in Service Hero’s Kuwait Telecom ranking, though independent consumer review sites such as PissedConsumer show low ratings (around 1.6/5) with recurring complaints about customer-support responsiveness.

Pros

  • First-mover 5G operator in Kuwait and the GCC, with 5G-Advanced live in Kuwait
  • Broad regional footprint across 8 MENA markets
  • Repeated independent network awards (Ookla, Opensignal) for 5G in Kuwait
  • Offers eSIM provisioning and tourist data packages in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

Cons

  • Low aggregate consumer ratings on third-party review platforms (around 1.6/5 on PissedConsumer)
  • Recurring user reports of billing disputes and slow technical-issue resolution
  • Footprint is concentrated in MENA, so direct service is limited outside the region

Frequently asked questions

Does Zain support eSIM?

Yes. Zain provides eSIM activation for its own subscribers in markets such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, usually through the Zain app or a branch visit with your ID; Saudi rules also require biometric registration for new lines. If that sounds like a hassle mid-trip, AviaeSIM offers prepaid travel eSIMs that connect to the Zain network and are delivered online with no registration at all.

How do I get a Zain eSIM as a tourist in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait?

Zain sells visitor lines at airports and branches: in Saudi Arabia you must register with your passport and biometrics, and in Kuwait an ID check applies too. The alternative is to install an AviaeSIM prepaid travel eSIM before departure — you buy it online, scan a QR code from your email and connect to the Zain network on arrival with no store queue.

Which countries can I use an AviaeSIM plan on the Zain network?

AviaeSIM travel plans currently connect to Zain networks in five countries: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Zambia and Sierra Leone. Pick the plan for your destination, or a regional Middle East plan where available, and the eSIM attaches to Zain locally. AviaeSIM is an independent travel eSIM brand using Zain infrastructure, so purchases and support are handled by AviaeSIM rather than Zain.

Is Zain roaming or a travel eSIM better for the Gulf?

Zain subscribers can buy roaming bundles for nearby countries, but visitors roaming on foreign SIMs in the Gulf often face steep charges. A prepaid AviaeSIM travel eSIM avoids that: you pay once for a set data package that runs on Zain's local network, keep your own number active for calls, and never risk an unexpected roaming bill when you get home.
